MATH IN ANCIENT AFRICA Besides the mythical emperor, Fu Hsi, of ancient China, who is believed to have been Ethiopian (perhaps, generically?) and the creator of parts of the I CHING, another early mathematician of interest was Muhammad ibn Muhamad, a native of northern Nigeria, who lived around 1732 AD. He was a master of magic squares of numbers, where every row, column and diagonal adds up to the same sum. Imagine a tic tac toe board with numbers 6,1, and 8 in the first row and numbers 7, 5 and 3 in the second row and numbers 2, 9 and 4 in the third row. If you played tic tac toe on this board, then any winning combination would add up to 15! |

THE STORY BEHIND THIS SITE. I have a Ph. D. in mathematics. Ever since I had the opportunity to study number theory under Professor Ross in my senior high school year, I've had a serious love affair with pure reasoning. CONTACT Email Me! Links to Other Sites |
